Romans 12:16
Have you ever noticed how we establish the “pecking order” based on ourselves? What I mean is this; if I’m surfing at home – locals rule, if I’m on a trip – out of towners should be treated nicely, if I rip – then kooks should beat it, but, if I’m a beginner (and we all were at some point) then there should be room for everyone. See what I mean? We establish things based on ourselves. Now, I’m not saying that we shouldn’t instruct and encourage people in the unwritten laws of surfing, but I’m talking about how we put ourselves above others. I’m not gonna talk to that kid – he’s too young. I’m not going surfing with that crew – people might think we’re friends. Well check out this verse in four different versions. Romans 12:16
16Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.
KJV
Get along with each other; don't be stuck-up. Make friends with nobodies; don't be the great somebody.
The Message
16Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited.
NIV
16 Live in harmony with each other. Don’t be too proud to enjoy the company of ordinary people. And don’t think you know it all!
New Living Translation
Based on what God says in this verse, what do you think He wants you to do this week in/out of the water?
Who do you surf for?
